Some babies take a dummy as early as day one and some just can’t manage to keep it in. A lot of parents don’t know this, but ALL babies are able to adopt a dummy habit from the age of 4-5 months due to sufficient oral development, so if you’d like your baby to take a dummy and they haven’t managed so far – there’s still a chance!
Babies discover the world through their mouth and dummies can help with oral development, hand-eye coordination and are there in case they want to suckle without feeding.
Should I offer a dummy?
Here are a few facts to help you decide…
You can still breastfeed
Many mums worry their baby will stop breastfeeding if offered a dummy. However research shows that breastfed babies can enjoy a dummy without nursing being affected at all!
It helps promote sleep
The act of suckling releases endorphins, hence it provides security, comfort and relaxation – all of which promote sleep. This is why most babies tend to fall asleep whilst feeding. Good to know – if they’re still hungry, a dummy will never suffice!
Help them feel safe
Recent American SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) risk studies have associated dummies with a lower risk of SIDS. Following that research more parents offer a dummy early on.
The majority of babies adopt an oral habit in the first few weeks of their lives. It’s up to you to offer a dummy, but the decision to take it lies with your baby.
